Nestled adjacent to the captivating Khuntan National Park, Gassan Khuntan stands as a dual embodiment of beauty and challenge, claiming its position among the most exceptional courses in Thailand. A symphony of meticulous landscaping and breathtaking natural vistas casts a spell of wonder on each hole, yielding moments worthy of a Kodak frame. Yet, amidst this picturesque allure, undivided focus remains the key to navigate the relentless succession of trials.
Gassan Khuntan unfolds a canvas painted with sharp doglegs, island greens, water crossings, and precipitous bunkers that punctuate its landscape. Every obstacle holds the power to unravel a scorecard. The fairways cloaked in Bermuda grass and the ultra-dwarf Bermuda greens combine to create meticulously groomed playing surfaces, echoing the commitment to excellence.
The 163-yard, par-3 5th hole poses a particularly daunting challenge with its diminutive island green. A pinpoint iron shot is the demand of the hour, seeking the heart of the green to evade the encircling water and greenside bunkers. Once on the green, the promise of a birdie emerges, but any miscue resulting in water or sand spells bogey or worse. Regardless of the outcome, the panoramic 360-degree vistas stand as an awe-inspiring backdrop. The course's final hole emerges as another standout, demanding precision off the tee and a calculated second shot to grace the narrow green in regulation and navigate away from the lurking water.
In 2018, an additional nine holes made their debut, shaping a par-34 course that ingeniously interweaves through the State Railway of Thailand train tracks. True to Gassan's legacy, each hole introduces a novel challenge, with the 440-yard fifth hole serving as the signature piece, displaying both the course's architectural brilliance and its seamless fusion with the surrounding panorama.
While the clubhouse stands in contrast to the natural tableau, it offers essential amenities including compact locker rooms, a pro shop, and a restaurant. The terrace reigns supreme, affording vistas that sweep over the course. Additional Gassan offerings encompass chipping and putting greens, alongside a lush grass driving range. The on-site resort caters chiefly to locals, advising golfers to consider a return to Chiang Mai after their round.
Gassan Khuntan's allure is undeniable, yet its layout is a challenge not for the faint of heart—reserving its trials for even the most accomplished of golfers, as even professionals may struggle to approach par.
