Perched upon a mountain vista that gazes out over an expansive clay lignite mine in Mae Moh, just south of Lampang, lies the Mae Moh Golf Course. Under the stewardship of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), this course is situated at a distance of 30 kilometers from Lampang and a journey of 125 kilometers from Chiang Mai.

The initial nine holes, dating back to 1884, gracefully navigate the contours of the mountain ridge, affording breathtaking panoramas of the encircling hills and valleys. A selection of holes presents an engaging mixture of inclines and declines, sometimes requiring blind shots to reach the greens, thus serving as an adept examination of golfing prowess. The subsequent nine holes, concluded in 1990, elevated this Chiang Mai golf course to a standard par-72 while extending its length to an impressive 6,840 yards.

Among the indelible impressions left by Mae Moh, the par-5 2nd hole stands out with its dual alternative greens. This brief yet demanding par-5 ascends sharply and bends to the left, culminating in a blind approach to the flag. The par-4 6th hole claims the title of the course's most challenging, as the tee shot descends into a valley bordered by a lake on the left side of the fairway. Skillful navigation around the lake enables an approach shot that ascends the opposite side of the valley, leading to a sloping green. A majestic tree stationed at the lake's edge poses an obstacle for most tee shots.

The 10th hole, seemingly a modest par-3, conceals its true nature as the course's index #2. A steep descent leads to a diminutive green, which is flanked by water at the front and a deep bunker strategically positioned to ensnare overzealous shots. Concluding the course is a crafty par-4 closing hole. Vigilance is required to circumvent the water to the right during the tee shot, necessitating a drive to the left side of the fairway. Subsequently, the water weaves in front of the green, demanding an impeccably executed long approach to achieve regulation play.

Facilities at Mae Moh may exude a rustic charm and, while not opulent, cater aptly to the majority of golfers' needs. Spanning a journey of approximately 1.5 hours from Chiang Mai, this publicly accessible golf course offers a diversion from the beaten path, rendering it an appealing choice for Chiang Mai golf aficionados seeking an alternative. The course's mature character might benefit from enhanced maintenance in certain areas, yet its distinctive and enjoyable design bestows a gratifying day of golf.
